City of Toledo recently issued the following announcement.
Mayor Kapszukiewicz and members of Toledo City Council were joined by Kid Mayor and Kid Council Members to officially launch their one-year term on the 22nd floor of One Government Center.
After the announcement, the kids attended their first Toledo City Council meeting and enjoyed a meal together while learning the basics about City of Toledo operations.
Quarterly for the remainder of the year, the kids will have the opportunity to visit and learn about the water treatment plant, Engage Toledo, Toledo Police, Toledo Fire & Rescue, and community partners like the Toledo Mud Hens. At the end of their one-year term, Kid Mayor and Kid Council will make a policy or law recommendation to the Mayor and City Council.
Hundreds of fourth graders from Toledo Public and Washington Local Schools applied to be a member of Kid Council. The top 13 candidates were selected by their schools and then interviewed by a panel of community leaders to choose the Kid Mayor.
This program is being presented in partnership with Toledo Public and Washington Local Schools, the City of Toledo and the Youth Empowerment and Engagement Committee of the Human Relations Commission.
