Toledo, OH On September 6, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09) was joined by Dr. Romules Durant Superintendent and CEO of Toledo Public Schools, J. Noah Brown Senior Advisor in the Office of Career, Technical and Adult Education in the United States Department of Education, Susie Rowe-Finley Senior Director of Toledo Technology Academy of Engineering, Tony Totty President of United Auto Workers Local 14, Sheena Barnes President of Toledo Public Schools Board of Education, other local leaders, and students to highlight $1.25 Million in federal funding for a new Toledo Public Schools Electric Vehicle Center.

The goal is to make the Toledo area a national leader in providing instruction for the maintenance and repair of electric vehicles. The Electric Vehicle Center will be part of the Toledo Technology Academy of Engineering, to offer classes on electric vehicle design and maintenance, and allow the district to form partnerships with vehicle manufacturers and provide training. Classes at the Electric Vehicle Center will also be available to adults. Toledo Public Schools has begun construction on a $5.7 Million Electric Vehicle Center project. The facility is expected to be ready for students in the fall of 2024.

The three target groups for future training at the Electric Vehicle Center include:

  • High school students seeking jobs in a cutting-edge industry.
  • Current mechanics who want to keep up their skills to be marketable.
  • Displaced autoworkers looking for a new career.
“Our children are our future, and the Toledo Public Schools system is the enrichment foundation that sets them on a path toward endless promise. Investing in our students is paramount in everything we do,” said Congresswoman Kaptur. “By thinking beyond the needs of the moment and looking strategically toward what awaits us we are prepared for the days that will come. I was pleased to secure the seed funding — $1.25 Million from the U.S. Department of Education — to begin a new electric vehicle training program. By establishing this new, modern vocational education program at Toledo Technology Academy, we will unlock the boundless potential for our students who are seeking to enter the growing and evolving next-generation automotive industry."

“The Electric Vehicle Center is the next phase of renovations and improvements being made to the DeVilbiss Campus of Innovation and will become an integral part of offerings at the Toledo Technology Academy of Engineering. Classes will focus on electric vehicle design and maintenance and will allow Toledo Public Schools to form partnerships with vehicle manufacturers,” said Dr. Romules Durant, Superintendent and CEO of Toledo Public Schools. “The ultimate goal is to establish the Toledo area as a national leader in providing instruction for the maintenance and repair of electric vehicles. Through the support of Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, we are well on our way to making our goal a reality.”
