State Senator Paula Hicks-Hudson | The Ohio Senate
State Senator Hicks-Hudson (D-Toledo) has criticized Ohio Senate Republicans for incorporating unrelated and controversial provisions in a bill intended to address the Biden ballot situation.
"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result," said Hicks-Hudson. "The majority has once again passed unnecessary legislation that undermines the will of the people under the guise of putting President Biden on the ballot. The unnecessary cost and waste of taxpayer dollars is absolutely shameful."
The Democratic National Committee recently announced plans to secure President Biden's place on the ballot through a virtual roll call before Ohio's August 7 deadline. Additionally, Ohio Senate Democrats have introduced legislation aimed at permanently resolving issues with Ohio law that have historically caused complications in presidential elections for both parties.
House Bill 271 was initially proposed to update the ballot issue numbering system. However, an amendment introduced by Senate Republicans not only facilitates President Biden's inclusion on the November ballot but also incorporates language previously opposed by Senate Democrats multiple times.
House Bill 271 now returns to the House for further consideration. A special session has been scheduled for Thursday, May 30, following a proclamation by the governor.
