Members of the Ohio Senate Democratic Caucus have expressed their reactions to the results of the November 5 general election concerning Issue 1. The outcome, which has disappointed many within the caucus, has prompted a strong response from its leaders.

Democratic Leader Nickie J. Antonio stated, “Power-hungry Republican politicians deceived voters, put deceptive language on the ballot, and outright lied to keep a grasp on their artificial legislative supermajorities.” Despite her disappointment in the result, she emphasized her commitment to continue advocating for fair maps alongside citizens across political affiliations.

Assistant Democratic Leader Hearcel F. Craig acknowledged his disappointment but accepted the outcome. He criticized what he described as a disinformation campaign funded by opponents and approved by Republicans on the Ballot Board, asserting that they used misleading tactics against Issue 1. "We will continue to fight for fair representation," Craig said.

Democratic Whip Kent Smith accused the Ohio GOP of deceiving voters with misleading ballot language and spreading misinformation about Issue 1. However, he remained optimistic about future efforts for equitable governance in Ohio: "The people of Ohio are resilient."

Assistant Democratic Whip Catherine D. Ingram described the failure to pass Issue 1 as a setback aimed at strengthening democracy and ensuring justice access. She reaffirmed commitment to fairness and equality: "Our work is not over."

Senator Paula Hicks-Hudson commented on perceived gerrymandering in ballot language while maintaining that public voices will persist despite current challenges.

Senator Bill DeMora criticized state officials like Secretary LaRose and Governor DeWine for allegedly manipulating election outcomes through various means such as voter purges and restrictive voting rules: “This is a dark day for all Ohioans who wanted to live in a representative democracy.”
