State Senator Paula Hicks-Hudson of Toledo expressed strong opposition to the Ohio Senate's approval of Senate Bill 1, which she referred to as the "Higher Education Destruction Act."

"Senate Bill 1 is still a bad bill," stated Hicks-Hudson. "No matter what changes have been made by the House, it doesn’t help the attack on the First Amendment rights, employment contract law, and sanctity of higher education in Ohio. It’s just putting lipstick on a pig."

The bill has faced significant opposition during its committee hearings in both the Senate and House of Representatives. Over 1,700 testimonies were submitted against the legislation, while fewer than 50 supported it. Critics argue that Senate Bill 1 could negatively impact Ohio's higher education by deterring students, faculty, and essential business partnerships.

The next step for Senate Bill 1 is consideration by Governor Mike DeWine for his signature.
