State Senator Paula Hicks-Hudson has expressed her opposition to the recent passage of Senate Bill 172 by the Ohio Senate. The bill, which she describes as a threat to the due process rights of immigrants residing in Ohio, has raised concerns among its critics.

"No one supports criminals violating the law, but this bill is an abomination," stated Hicks-Hudson. She emphasized that individuals seeking a better life should not be targeted based on their immigration status and stressed that American citizens should not be compelled to carry passports for citizenship verification under this new legislation.

Senate Bill 172 introduces several measures:

- It increases state authority over immigration enforcement by banning local actions that limit cooperation with federal authorities.

- The bill permits action against individuals not only for unlawful presence but also based on mere suspicion without concrete evidence or legal findings.

- Its scope extends to traditionally protected areas such as places of worship, courthouses, schools, and community centers.

- Public officials are prohibited from protecting undocumented individuals even during emergencies or humanitarian situations.

- Individuals acting "in good faith" under the bill are shielded from penalties, even if their actions conflict with local laws or policies.

The bill will now proceed to the Ohio House of Representatives for further consideration.

Hicks-Hudson underscores the importance of immigrants knowing their rights as a means of safeguarding immigrant families. She encourages accessing available resources for support.
