Rep. Marcy Kaptur, who has represented Ohio’s 9th district in the U.S. Congress since 1983, recently addressed water issues and regional cooperation efforts through a series of posts on her social media account.
On July 19, 2025, Kaptur highlighted the importance of a state initiative for water protection, stating: "Ohio’s water future is on the line. The H2Ohio program is critical to protecting Lake Erie, supporting local farmers, and ensuring safe drinking water for all Ohioans. Water is life and we cannot afford to roll back this progress."
The following day, July 20, she drew attention to policy developments from a recent regional conference: "Here are just some of the declarations and resolutions passed this year at the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative Annual Meeting:"
In another post from July 20, Kaptur described collaborative efforts among leaders in the region: "Last month, 325 Mayors, Tribal, and First Nation leaders committed to clean water, US-Canada relations, and climate resilience. They met to champion the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative. Their efforts reflect the urgent needs of our Great Lakes communities. Thanks"
Kaptur’s advocacy comes amid ongoing concern over water quality in Lake Erie and surrounding regions—a longstanding issue for residents and policymakers alike. The H2Ohio program she referenced aims to improve water quality through targeted investments in conservation practices that benefit both environmental health and agricultural productivity.
Born in Toledo in 1946 and currently residing there at age 76, Kaptur has maintained a focus on environmental stewardship throughout her career. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Madison with a BA in 1968.
