U.S. Representative Marcy Kaptur, who has served Ohio’s 9th district in Congress since 1983, posted a series of statements on August 8, 2025, reflecting on the passing of astronaut Jim Lovell and expressing concerns about union rights at the Department of Veterans Affairs.

In her first post on August 8, Kaptur honored the late astronaut: "Today we mourn the passing of Jim Lovell, a legendary NASA astronaut who visited space 4 times including his command of the Apollo 13 mission. Jim made us all proud, and his legacy of travel to the stars, and moon above will not soon be forgotten. Rest in peace Commander Lovell." She followed up with a second message providing additional information: "Read more about his remarkable life here: https://t.co/4KNu9ySQUx".

Later that evening, Kaptur addressed labor issues affecting veterans working at the Department of Veterans Affairs. On August 8 she wrote: "Union busting is disgusting. The Trump Administration is working to fire tens of thousands at the VA including countless veterans. This will immediately harm vulnerable vets! As a proud union daughter I was taught what unions mean: honor—dignity—solidarity. We MUST stand up for".

Kaptur’s public service career began in 1983 when she succeeded Ed Weber as representative for Ohio’s 9th district. Born in Toledo in 1946 and currently residing there, Kaptur has been recognized for her longstanding advocacy for labor rights and veterans’ affairs. She holds a BA from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
