Rep. Marcy Kaptur, U.S. Congresswoman representing Ohio’s 9th district since 1983, recently shared updates on her social media accounts highlighting her advocacy for workers’ rights and infrastructure improvements in the Great Lakes region.
On August 24, 2025, Kaptur referenced her personal background in a union household and expressed ongoing support for labor: "Growing up in a union household I learned that collective bargaining brought better working conditions, good health and retirement benefits, and dignity on the job for all workers. When it comes to standing with workers, let’s just say it’s not my first time here. #1u https://t.co/9CXrNxggF6"
The following day, she posted about her visit to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to tour the Soo Locks: "On my way to the Upper Peninsula in Michigan to tour the Soo Locks — a major artery for all of the goods that flow from ports across the Great Lakes region. From Duluth, to Toledo, to Buffalo, and beyond — this funding I delivered is helping communities across our Great Lakes https://t.co/hTPlnhQce2" (August 25, 2025).
Later that same day, Kaptur highlighted technological advancements at the Soo Locks: "The new Soo Locks with 21st century technology and greater depth will be a major win for our Great Lakes region, allowing our ports expanded access to global markets. Upon completion, this will be the first new Lock in Sault St. Marie in over 60 years. https://t.co/YCjWLc00ec" (August 25, 2025).
Marcy Kaptur was born in Toledo, Ohio in 1946 and has maintained residence there throughout her career. She earned her BA from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1968. Since replacing Ed Weber in Congress more than four decades ago, Kaptur has been recognized as one of the longest-serving women currently holding office in Congress.
